A 9-year-old boy, Grady Lucas, was helped by his local community to raise enough money so that he could get a diabetic alert dog.
Grady has had type 1 diabetes since he was four. The boy has to wear a monitoring device and an insulin pump. His sugar levels and diet has to be closely monitored.
Last year Grady’s family had a scary close call with the boy.
Beth Lierl, a nurse at Grady’s school, said that somebody came running to her and informed her that Grady needs medical attention. Beth grabbed the emergency glucagon and ran to Grady, who was in the gym. Grady could not talk at that time and also was not responding to anything.
Grady’s blood sugar was very low, but within moments, Beth and Grady’s family worked together to bring the sugar level back to normal.
Beth later thought that if the sugar levels had gone down while the boy was asleep at home, then that could turn into a drastic situation.
Beth gave Grady’s family the idea of having a diabetic alert dog.
A diabetic alert dog can be bought in around $15000, and Grady’s family does not have enough resources because they already have to spend a lot of money on Grady’s medical care.
Beth started a Gofundme page for Grady, and the campaign has been able to raise $23600, allowing Grady to have the dog.
Grady and his family are very grateful to everyone who contributed to the Gofundme campaign and made donations to help Grady in getting a diabetic alert dog.
The diabetic alert dogs can sense the changes in the blood sugar levels in the body of their owners. The dogs can then alert the owners if they have a change in their blood sugar levels even while they are sleeping.
