Recent statistics say that dogs are getting less exercise now. Based on a survey conducted, more than half of the dog population do not get their needed daily stroll. Also, for those who get a stroll, the average walk is less than 20 minutes. From the number of dogs who gets to be walked, 58% are not done daily.
According to the same survey, the reasons given by dog owners are quite varied. First, they said that their dogs do not like walking outside. Second, poor weather is also given as an excuse for not taking their dog to exercise. Thirdly, they said that their dogs also do not want to get dirty.
Majority of dog owners say that they are busy and “cannot be bothered.” They are tired after work, so they don’t have enough time and energy to take their pets for a walk.
According to the Kennel Club, adult dogs need to be walked for a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour a day to maintain their health. Sadly, the survey shows that this is not the case for many of the dogs.
One of the responsibilities of a dog owner is to ensure that his/her pet is well taken care of. Caring for the pet means the dog is fed well, provided with good shelter and given enough exercise. Pets’ exercise should be on a daily basis whatever the weather.
Like humans, dogs are at risk of having health-related problems such as obesity, joint pains or stress-related issues if they don’t have a regular without a workout. Exercise is essential for their physical and mental well-being.
It is important for dog owners to rediscover the advantages of taking their dogs for a walk. It is a way for your pet to socialize with people and other animals. In fact, walking can also be a stress reliever for the pet owner.
Walking can be done at any weather because canines are built to tolerate any weather as long as it is just for a limited time like a 30-minute exercise.
